Bryan College Student Health Insurance Guidelines & Questions v. July 2008
Introduction: My child is getting ready to start college. What are her Insurance coverage options? If your child is currently covered on your health plan as a dependent, check with the plan to see if she can remain on the plan as a full-time student. Some insurers allow dependent children to remain on their parents’ health insurance plan for as long as they are full-time students. Other insurers have age limits - for example, with some plans, dependents over the age of 22 get booted off the plan, regardless of their student status. If you and your child are covered by an HMO, and your child is going away to college in another state or region, you may also want to check and make sure your child is covered by Bryan's providers (see 3 Out Of 4 Test below) Bryan does offer it's own student health plans. As a general rule, this plan is reasonably priced, and enrollees will have access to doctors and hospitals near Bryan. If your child is far away from home, this is one option you should definitely consider.
Question: As Far as Health Insurance, what does Bryan require? Answer: All full-time Students at Bryan college MUST have Functional Health Insurance. “Functional Health Insurance” means that the insurance actually covers the student at the majority of the Bryan health care providers / locations: “Majority of the Bryan health care providers” means 3 out of 4 of the following:
Question: How Do I find out if my Insurance covers these providers? Answer: Unfortunately this is going to require a phone call to your insurance company's customer help line, this number can be found on your insurance card. When you call, first ask them if they cover services by Dr. David Jenkinson (NPI # 1104812874) if they do then they should cover services at at least 2 out of 3 of the remaining provider... you're done. If they say they do Not cover Dr. Jenkinson's services then you have to go down the list and see if they cover the remaining 3 providers (Rhea, Erlanger, Quest labs)
Question: What should I do if I don't have any Health Insurance? Answer: You must purchase either the Bollinger Student Health Insurance* or similar Student Health Insurance product... (Again other Student Health Ins. plans must cover the student at the majority of the Bryan health care providers; we know Bollinger does.)
Question: We have Insurance but it doesn't cover my student at Bryan, it fails “The 3 Out of 4 Test”, what do I do? Answer: Call your insurance company and see if they have a “College Student Extension” rider. With this additional coverage (usually at only a small increase in premium) see if your plan now passes the “ 3 Out of 4 Test” - if not or they don't have a extension rider, then you must purchase either the Bollinger Student Health Insurance* or similar Student Health Insurance product...
Question: What's an NPI Number? Answer: It stands for National Provider Identification, it is a relatively new system that the health care system uses for identifying Physicians, Hospitals, Clinics and the like. This should be all you need to give to your insurance company to see if Dr. Jenkinson is covered under your plan. If your insurance company requires more information just call the Bryan PolyClinic (423-285-1690) or email ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
